On Nov. 19, 2025, Vedinad, the creator of the much-popular roguelike game Megabonk, announced his withdrawal from the Best Debut Game category at The Game Awards 2025, saying that the title isn’t his debut work and that he had made games before Megabonk’s debut.

He clarified that he did so under different studio names, which meant that Megabonk isn’t truly a debut work from an indie developer. He added that he appreciates the nomination, but he just doesn’t feel right being nominated in this category. He finished his statement by saying, “You should vote for another one of the amazing debut titles, they are all amazing games!”

Geoff Keighley, producer and host of The Game Awards, acknowledges Vedinad’s withdrawal, saying that the indie developer has reached out to him to say that “he is an established solo developer who had been presenting himself as a new creator under the name Vedinad.” Interestingly enough, Keighley also mentioned that “He’ll share more about his story when he’s ready,” alluding to the fact that the Megabonk creator might have something to say about it in the future.

The Game Awards 2025 is happening on Dec. 11, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. Last year, Astro Bot won Game of the Year, and Baldur’s Gate 3 won the year before.
