Key points
- A Korean website has claimed that Sony’s Horizon franchise has already sold 40 million copies.
- The last officially reported number was 38 million from a legal document.
- NCSOFT is currently creating an MMORPG called Horizon Steel Frontiers set in the Horizon franchise.
According to Nate, a Korean website, Sony’s Horizon franchise has already sold 40 million copies, making it one of Sony’s top-selling franchises. The number came from an article talking about the new MMORPG that NCSOFT is creating, which is also set in the Horizon setting.
However, the official numbers sold haven’t been confirmed by Sony yet, and the last one it did was a report back in July where the company mentioned that it sold 38 million copies in a lawsuit that was directed at Tencent.
The Horizon franchise started when Horizon Zero Dawn was released back in 2017 for the PlayStation 4. A second game followed in 2022, which is a direct sequel to the former. Horizon Call of the Mountain was the third installment, which was a launch title for the PlayStation VR2, but it isn’t directly related to the two other installments.
Currently, NCSOFT is creating an MMORPG called Horizon Steel Frontiers that was announced at South Korea’s premier game conference, G-Star 2025. The developers did not mention a release date for the title, nor did they mention a release window.
On the other hand, it was also reported that Guerrilla Games, the developers behind the franchise, is creating a multiplayer title also in the Horizon franchise that’s unrelated to Horizon Steel Frontiers.
