Red Dead Redemption was rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, suggesting that a native version of the game for the current ninth-generation consoles is on the way.
A successor to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver and the second game in the Red Dead series, it received an M rating for Mature 17+.
The game’s description on the ESRB website mentions zombies as one of the enemy types players can encounter in the game, hinting that the standalone expansion Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will be included in the new iteration of Red Dead Redemption.
Developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games, the predecessor of Red Dead Redemption 2 was initially released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in August 2023, and for Windows PC in October 2024. It is also playable on PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Now cloud gaming subscription service and on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S due to the backward compatibility.
Set during the decline of the American frontier in the year 1911, in the states of New Austin and West Elizabeth, fictionalized versions of the Western United States, and the fictional Mexican state of Nuevo Paraíso, Red Dead Redemption follows the story of John Marston, a former outlaw who, after his wife and son are taken hostage by the government as ransom for his services as a hired gun, sets out to bring three members of his former gang to justice.
As for the aforementioned Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare expansion, set in an alternate timeline from the base game’s story, it adds a non-canonical, horror-themed single-player campaign, two multiplayer modes, and cosmetic additions to the environments and characters, while following the story of John Marston as he liberates towns overrun by the undead while looing for the cause of and possible cure for a zombie plague that has infected his wife and son.
Red Dead Redemption received 18 accolades in different categories across multiple industry award ceremonies.
