Key points
- Sony has fired back at Tencent, asking the court to deny its motion to dismiss the current case regarding Light of Motiram.
- Sony said that the damage has already been done due to promotional materials being released globally.
- The lawsuit between the two companies started in July 2025.
In a recent development covered by The Game Post, Sony has asked the court to reject Tencent’s attempt to get the Light of Motiram case dismissed, saying that the damage has been done and that it continues. Additionally, Sony has accused Tencent of playing “a shell game with its brands and entities.”
The new filing addresses Tencent’s argument, stating that the lawsuit was premature and that no actual infringement had occurred, as the game’s release was delayed to Q4 2027. Sony denies this, claiming that the damage has already been done because promotional materials have been released globally.
Sony also accused Tencent of playing a shell game, saying that Tencent has been using subsidiaries such as Level Infinite, Aurora Studios and Proxima Beta, studios under its belt, to confuse people as to who is really behind Light of Motiram.
The lawsuit between the two started in July when Sony accused Tencent of copyright infringement, calling Light of Motiram a “slavish clone” of the Horizon franchise. Tencent fired back in September, asking the court to dismiss it and accusing Sony of wanting “an impermissible monopoly on genre conventions.” Tencent added that Light of Motiram was inspired by games such as The Legend of Zelda and Far Cry, among many others.
