On Oct. 9, 2025, PlayStation uploaded a Project Amethyst update on its YouTube channel with the intent of sharing breakthroughs that its collaborative project with AMD has achieved. The video was presented by Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD, and Marc Cerny, lead architect of PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
According to them, while everything that they mentioned in the video still exists in simulation right now, they were able to explore new concepts such as neural arrays and universal compression.
The video starts by them talking about how the current FSR and PSSR technologies are very heavy on system memory and GPUs, but through neural arrays, the possibilities of a better FSR, ray tracing, more efficiency and better scalability are possible.
Universal compression, just as the name implies, deals with the ability to compress data so that it won’t be too heavy on memory bandwidth usage. This can lead to higher visual quality, improved performance and the best part of all, lower power consumption.
This video has revived some rumors about the PlayStation 6, more specifically, its release date. A reputable leaker on NeoGAF, KeplerL2, said that the PlayStation 6 being released in 2027 is not just a possibility, but “it’s the plan unless any unexpected delays happen.”
