Microsoft denies going “software-only,” reaffirms commitment to Xbox hardware

Microsoft fired back on circulating rumors that the company will only focus on being a software-only company in the future by putting out a statement saying that they are “investing in our future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered and built by Xbox.”
The rumors started in a message board called NeoGAF, where a trusted Xbox leaker mentioned that “the future of Xbox is software publishing.” This rumor circulated quickly, prompting Microsoft to release a statement about it.
According to Windows Central, Microsoft gave a statement on Oct. 5, 2025, and also mentioned that people could refer to its agreement announcement with AMD, as another rumor that plans for the original Xbox handheld were cancelled due to AMD wanting to sell 10 million units of the console, but Microsoft isn’t too sure if it actually would.
However, it’s worth noting that another insider, Jez Corden, said on social media that the rumor isn’t true at all. He did not reply to the comments under his post regarding clarification of the situation.
Recently, in partnership with Asus, Microsoft announced the ROG Xbox Ally X and Xbox Ally. Fans can now pre-order the device, with rumors floating around that some of them have already received it, despite the device supposedly being only available on Oct. 16, 2025.
