Key points
- Hideo Kojima is planning to take video games beyond the screen.
- A short trailer from the 10th Anniversary of Kojima Productions saw the reveal of a project in partnership with Niantic Spatial.
- The trailer had elements similar to Death Stranding.
Kojima Productions held a livestream celebrating its 10th anniversary that featured John Hanke, founder of Niantic and now Niantic Spatial, on Sept. 23, 2025. His segment in the stream talked about a “new form of entertainment.”
They then presented a short trailer of a futuristic take on augmented reality, with a graphical style similar to one of Kojima Productions’ games, Death Stranding. The trailer also showed a few people wearing smart glasses and seeing holographic images of bonsai trees and other gamified elements.
It’s worth noting that Niantic Spatial is different from Niantic, the creators of Pokémon GO. They were one company but split in March this year after its Scopely purchase. Niantic’s site says, “We are building a living model of the world that people and machines can talk to.”
A short discussion followed in which Kojima said he wants to take video games beyond the screen and be able to interact with the real world. He said that he can’t talk much about the project yet, but one thing people can expect is that there will be entertainment even after climbing a mountain.
