Sony’s PSP Patapon’s spiritual successor Ratatan begins early access on Sept. 18 at 8 am PST for Steam. These are the same developers responsible for the Patapon series, including game designer Hiruyuki Kotano. He is leading the development for Ratatan, thereby sharing Patapon’s rhythm-action gameplay while adding new elements to the loop, such as online co-op and a roguelike gameplay loop.
At full price, the game will cost $24.99, ¥2,800, or €24.50, but the rhythm game will be discounted 10% during the first ten days of release. The game will eventually fully release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, PC, and Xbox.
The developers committed to an early access release for Ratatan to gather community feedback to improve the game as it reaches the hands of the players; early access will last approximately six months to a year, according to the official Steam page for the game.
As of writing, the early access will have the following features:
- Core rhythm-action gameplay
- Multiple worlds (e.g., up to World 5)
- Multiple playable characters
- A variety of weapons and skills
- Multiplayer support
- Boss battles and progression systems
Ratatan is a co-op rhythm roguelike action game, supporting up to four players online. The developers utilized 2D animations to showcase the unique performance the art form has, giving a lively personality to the action.

The game’s roadmap for the rest of the year, alongside the months leading up to 2026, has already been revealed. Towards the end of October, the developers will be adding Super Fever Skills, which are additional Ratatan upgrades. In December, the Descent of the Dark Ratatan begins, debuting new scenarios.
