Content creator and hardware specialist TERA created a DIY PlayStation 5 portable towards the end of Dec. 2024, with a follow-up YouTube video posted earlier last week. In the video, the content creator walked through the steps of creating the portable console, featuring a 15.6-inch LCD screen display and a server power supply connected directly into the case, eliminating the need for a separate power supply.
The creator began by expertly disassembling the current-generation console, including removing the motherboard, which serves as the main component of the console.
He then goes on to create a unique cooling mechanism, taking into account the PlayStation 5’s 200W power consumption. They walk through the trial and error process of testing various cooling systems, until they settled on using an aluminum plate, purchasing a new CPU cooler, and 3D printing a fan to ventilate the PlayStation 5 portable. The creator used a heat sink for the CPU cooler. Various individual parts of the system had specifically catered solutions to disperse the heat; the full video goes into more details regarding the decision-making process.
The case was 3D printed; the creator connected the console to an RC car battery to showcase the hardware’s functionality without requiring a power supply. While connected, the PlayStation 5 had a 30-minute battery life when playing PlayStation 4 games. The battery life for PlayStation 5 titles is expected to be even shorter.
The final product is two-thirds the size of their previous creation, which they claim was too ambitious with the screen size, resulting in poor battery life.
