Key points
- Ubisoft will focus more on multiplayer for future Far Cry games.
- It’s rumored that the next Far Cry game will be an extraction shooter set in the Alaskan wilderness.
- There’s still no release date for the upcoming Far Cry title.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot showed up at Saudi Arabia’s New Global Sport Conference, where he was asked about the future of Far Cry, only to reveal that the franchise will focus more on its multiplayer aspects.
Guillemot added that the goal “on Far Cry [is] really to bring the multiplayer aspects more predominantly pushed, so that it can also be played for a long time by players,” essentially transitioning the game to some kind of live-service title.
His comments have strengthened the rumors that the next Far Cry game will be an extraction-based shooter set in the Alaskan wilderness. It was claimed that the game is being made using Snowdrop Engine, the same one that powered Tom Clancy’s The Division and Star Wars Outlaws.
The last Far Cry game released was Far Cry 6 on Oct. 7, 2021, almost four years ago. While the game had online co-op and missions, it was far from the rumored gameplay loop that would feature more of a competitive game.
The next Far Cry game still has no release date. The development started in early 2024, according to Insider Gaming, but it was rebooted earlier this year, pushing back its state to prototype once more.
