French voice actress Françoise Cadol sent Aspyr Media a cease and desist demand for allegedly generating her voice for Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, a collection that was released on Feb. 14, 2025. She performed the voice of Lara Croft in the original Tomb Raider games, alongside providing the French dub for Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider films.
The formal notice issued requests the compilation to be withdrawn, with supporting documentation to determine the number of copies sold. Cadol shared her claims to French news outlet Le Parisien first, where she told the publication that her fans were the first to notice the similarities between Cadol’s voice in the original games and the voice used in the remasters.
Françoise Cadol’s lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, specializes in intellectual property and AI. He claims the alleged use of AI is immediately noticeable, with the AI voice having a metallic impact and sounding very choppy without proper intonation. After Françoise Cadol publicized her claims, numerous users have begun leaving “negative” reviews on Steam, criticizing the AI French voice usage.
French YouTuber Kingdom of Scott analyzes the alleged AI usage in the video above, which showcases the original performance from Cadol alongside the alleged AI version. Aspyr Media’s response to Françoise Cadol’s legal action has not yet been publicized, and the story is still developing. AI voice-generation in video games is becoming a more prevalent issue as of 2025, with Konami also under fire for alleged unconsented usage of a voice actress’s voice.
