In a reply to an X post, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that for Borderlands 4, “the expectation for using a below min-spec machine should be that the game is unplayable,” but the recently released PC specs and features mentioned that players should have at least 8 CPU cores to play it.
This is a problem because it excludes almost half of the Steam users who might be interested in playing the game. The August 2025 Steam Hardware & Software Survey revealed that 47.85% of the Steam population does not have 8 cores of CPU.
The survey also revealed that most people only have 6 CPU cores, as 30% of Steam users landed in this category. Randy Pitchford saying that the game will be unplayable for those under the minimum specification can be pretty bad for the sales of the game.
For example, AAA games such as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Battlefield 6 both only require 6 CPU cores. Additionally, the former was also created in Unreal Engine 5, the same engine Borderlands 4 is using. On the other hand, there have been reports of Battlefield 6 players being able to play the game while still being below the minimum specs.
Borderlands 4 is coming out on Sept. 12, 2025, for the PlayStation 5, PC and the Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned to be released on Oct. 3, 2025.
