Bungie Reveals New Features Coming to Destiny 2 With Star Wars-Inspired Expansion Renegades

On Sept. 9, 2025, Bungie revealed some features that will be added to Destiny 2 and gameplay regarding its upcoming major expansion, Renegade, which is expected to launch on Dec. 2, 2025.

Renegade is going to be the first expansion in Destiny 2 that will have a crossover with another IP, which will be the epic space opera franchise Star Wars. Destiny 2’s expansion will introduce lightsabers, Imperial-style walkers, blasters that sound like ones from Star Wars and even X-Wing fighters.

Players will also encounter the Lawless Frontiers, which consists of contracts that will see them smuggling, bounty hunting and even sabotaging things. These missions can be done in single-player or with a full squad.

The devs also said that the new expansion “brings the grit, guns and glory of the space Western to Destiny,” hinting at its references to being an outlaw or just simply being a renegade just like in the Wild West.

Renegade abilities will also be introduced to the game, but the developers warn that these will not be subclass-based powers. They will instead be unlocked through the new campaign and post-game activities. There are three different types of Renegade abilities: Vehicle, Defense and Offense.

A new social hub will also be present when the expansion drops, as the old Tharsis Junction will be converted into the Tharsis Outpost, where players can interact with shady individuals. This is also the main hub where players can grab contracts and manage their reputation.

Finally, a new dungeon will also be launching alongside the expansion, but Bungie did not mention the exact date it will drop. The developers only said that it is planned to be added to the game during the second week of expansion.
