An interview with JPGames revealed that the main reason for the almost 20-year absence of Onimusha from the limelight was due to Capcom’s lack of resources to be able to support its development. Additionally, the developers also revealed that the company has wanted to make an Onimusha game for quite some time.
Satoru Nihei, director of the upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and producer Akihito Kadowaki explained that the development of the company’s game in recent years has been quite large. While not directly said, this probably includes Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds.
The development only really started in 2020 when “we finally had the people that we wanted in place to build the game.” Additionally, the developers also mentioned that the RE Engine finally had the features they needed to make the game that they wanted to.
The developers also shared how they were able to use Toshiro Mifune, a Japanese actor who’s considered one of the best of all time, as the model for the main character of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Kadowaki mentioned that they had to go through Mifune’s movies, “finding various angles so that we could manually model his likeness correctly.”
In terms of permissions, Kadowaki also mentioned that they went to his production company and made sure that it was all faithful and understood. He also added that they contacted his relatives and that “they gave their permission and their blessing for the project.”
Onimusha: Way of the Sword still has no concrete release date, but it is expected to be released in 2026. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
