Key points
- Hollow Knight set a new Steam player record after the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong.
- The game’s record now sits at 95,655 players on Steam alone.
- Hollow Knight was initially released in 2017.
On Sept. 7, 2025, Hollow Knight, the prequel to the much-anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong, broke its previous all-time peak concurrent player record on Steam. Right now, it sits at 95,655.
Its rise back to stardom occurred in August 2025 when rumors of Hollow Knight: Silksong’s release suddenly materialized. Interest in the game shot up, with SteamDB reporting an increase of 433.3% that month, or around 57,056 players.
It’s also worth noting that the game is not just available on Steam but also on other platforms and subscription plans such as Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. This means that the full number of Hollow Knight’s players is not accounted for and is much higher than what SteamDB is showing.
The sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is also performing extremely well on Steam, with SteamDB recording 587,150 all-time concurrent players on Steam. Again, just like its prequel, the game is available on other platforms and other subscription plans.
Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania developed by Team Cherry. The game was released in 2017 for PC, Linux and macOS. A Switch version followed in 2018, and a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One rounded up the platforms with a release in the same year.
