Developed by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, 2016’s Stardew Valley allows players to assume the role of a character who inherits their deceased grandfather’s dilapidated farm in the valley the game is named after.
Stardew Valley is an open-ended simulator where players manage a farm by clearing land, growing seasonal crops and raising animals while building skills in farming, foraging, fishing, mining and combat. The game also includes social features, such as forming relationships with townspeople, with the option to marry and have up to two children.
The game won the category “The World Is Grim Enough, Let’s Just All Get Along” Award at the 2017 Steam Awards and the “Breakthrough Award” at the 2016 Golden Joystick Awards.
As for 2021’s Psychonauts 2, developed by Double Fine and published by Xbox Game Studios, it allows the player to control Raz, a young acrobat who is training to become a Psychonaut, a member of an international task force that uses their psychic abilities to stop those that perform nefarious deeds with their own psychic forces.
In Psychonauts 2, which directly follows the events of the VR title, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, the Psychonauts try to learn who was really behind the capture of their leader, unveiling a deep mystery surrounding the organization’s founding and Raz’s family history.
The game has won three awards in different categories across multiple industry award ceremonies.
2023’s puzzle video game Viewfinder, developed by Sad Owl Studios and published by Thunderful Publishing, is based on mapping images contained in photographs or other two-dimensional works onto three-dimensional spaces of the game’s world, creating new geometries and layouts.
The game is presented as part of a simulation used by a handful of researchers that were using the space to try to discover the means to revitalize plant life on Earth, as in the real world, all flora has been wiped out, leaving the world without a viable source of oxygen. The protagonist, who works with a partner in the real world, explores the simulation, working through puzzles to try to find clues of the research that was being done, with the help of an artificial intelligence Cheshire cat named Cait.
