Key points

  1. Villainy is a central feature in Judas, with the Big 3 joining the player as friends.
  2. Ignoring one of them enough causes them to become the game’s villain, decided directly by player actions and decisions.
  3. Upon becoming the villain, the character gains new powers designed to subvert the player’s actions and goals.

In Judas’ latest development update, Ghost Story Games outlines a new gameplay feature: Villainy. The Big 3, as they are dubbed in the official update, initially join the player as friends. One of the three inevitably becomes the game’s villain, decided directly by players’ actions and decisions.

Namely, ignoring one of them enough prompts a shift in their demeanor, thereby granting the character new powers specifically designed to subvert players’ actions and goals.

The developers stated that in Judas, players will get to know the characters intimately. Losing one of them will “feel like losing a friend.”

“We want to play with that dynamic, and we want that choice to be super hard. The Big 3 are all going to be competing for your favor and attention,” the developers elaborated

The development update was written by Ken Levine and the Ghost Story Team. Levine, co-founder of Ghost Story Games, previously communicated that he hopes to create a game where the player’s decisions have a genuine impact on the world and the characters within it.

The Big 3, unlike Judas in BioShock Infinite, who knew nothing about the player themselves, will keenly observe the player’s approach to combat, hacking, crafting and interactions with the other two characters.

The mentioned Big 3 are Hope, a robot who was everyone’s best friend on the Mayflower, Sheriff Tom Austin, a robot security officer, and Queen Nefertiti, a robot who has embraced her identity and sees robots as the next stage of humanity’s evolution.

Players control a character named Judas, who is the lowest-ranking, most hated Violator aboard a ship known as The Mayflower. Judas was reprinted by the ship after every last passenger aboard died.

As of writing, no official release date for Judas is currently available. The developers communicated that despite wanting to set a date, they are not ready to finalize and commit to one yet.
