Eagle-eyed Reddit users in r/needforspeed have spotted that Criterion Games, the studio behind recent Need For Speed games, has added “a Battlefield Studio” under its name, showing its dedication to the franchise.
In 2023, EA restructured its studios into two organizations, and Criterion ended up joining EA Entertainment and moved away from EA Sports. This ended up in a press release mentioning that Criterion Games will start helping with Battlefield.
Sure enough, after its work on Need For Speed Unbound in 2022, the team started collaborating with DICE, Ripple Effect Studios and Motive Studio in creating Battlefield 6, the newest entry in the Battlefield franchise.
While this brings good news to Battlefield fans, Need For Speed fans couldn’t be more worried about their games. No news of an upcoming Need For Speed game has been mentioned by EA either, despite saying that work on the franchise will continue in 2023.
Criterion Games has been a staple racing game studio, being the one that created the Burnout franchise. Its final Burnout game was Burnout Paradise, which was released in 2008 for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360. After that, the studio started working on Need For Speed games, with the latest one being Need For Speed Unbound, which was released in 2022.
