ASRock’s 12v-2×6 Cable Supposedly Protects Against Overheating Plaguing Powerful GPUs

Key points
- Multiple reports of 16-pin power connectors melting have been coming in.
- RTX 5090 Series GPUs have melting issues, according to user reports, alongside the Radeon RX 9000.
- ASRock’s 12V-2×6 L-type connector helps mitigate the issue, but must be used in conjunction with compatible ASRock PSUs.
ASRock is marketing its 12V-2X6 L-type connector cable as a solution to the overheating caused by some of the latest powerful GPUs, which reportedly melted power supply units. Powerful GPUs provided by both AMD and Nvidia have reportedly caused the melting of power connectors.
Nvidia’s RTX 5090 Founders Edition melted a consumer’s connector while connecting using a non-official power cable, with no reports of melting from the official power connectors. As for the melted Radeon RX 9070, VideoCardz believes that the higher power was the main contributor to the melting of the power cable.
WCFtech reports that ASRock’s latest cable might be the solution to the issue; the cable comes with a built-in NTC Sensor to detect resistance changes, offering Over-Temperature Protection. The cable is only compatible with ASRock PSUs, with only ASRock’s Tacihi and Phantom Gaming series supporting the new feature.
Whether or not it effectively mitigates the melting is not yet known, as the story is still developing and the cable has yet to be released. The cable will reportedly cost around $40, and ships with a 2-year limited warranty.
