Set in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Harran, where a mysterious viral outbreak has turned most of the population into hyper-aggressive zombie-like creatures, the game follows the story of Kyle Crane, an undercover operative of The Global Relief Effort organization, which assists survivors still trapped in the city, tasked to infiltrate the quarantine zone to find Kadir “Rais” Suleiman, a political figure gone rogue who has a file that contains vital data on the virus, which could potentially lead to a cure.
Developed by Techland and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and released on January 27, 2015, Dying Light sold 20 million units by April 2022.
As of the time of writing, the game has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with 345,435 reviews and an all-time peak of 45,876 players, according to SteamDB.
In February 2022, the title received a sequel, which now goes as Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition, and on September 19, 2025, the franchise will receive the third installment titled Dying Light: The Beast.
