In an interview with Video Games Chronicle, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida revealed that Square Enix had “positive discussions” regarding the game’s potential porting to Nintendo’s newest console, the Switch 2. He added that he aims to get the game to as many players as possible.
Yoshida mentioned that the Switch 2 port could open up more possibilities to play the game away from the PC or TV. He mentioned that players might be able to do more leisurely content, such as crafting and gathering, using the Switch 2, and leave raiding and dungeons to much more powerful hardware.
Additionally, he also wanted to introduce the genre to the younger generation who might’ve never heard of MMOs or have not tried one. “I would be super excited to get these new players into this genre and enjoying the game as well,” Yoshida said in the interview.
It’s not just Final Fantasy XIV that’s on the negotiating table. Yoshida also hinted that there’s a chance that Final Fantasy XVI will be ported to the Switch 2.
In May 2025, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is coming to the Switch 2. Series director Naoki Hamaguchi sees this opportunity as “setting the framework to open up the possibility of porting the entire series.”
