Developed by Alus and published by Sega, the title is an enhanced version of the base game, Persona 4, which was released on July 10, 2008.
Persona 4 Golden was released for PlayStation Vita in 2012 and then ported to Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S in the early 2020s, selling a total of 2.5 million copies worldwide.
Chronologically, the fifth installment in the Persona series takes place in 2011, in the fictional rural Japanese town of Inaba, and follows a high school student named Yu Narukami, who has recently moved from the city to attend school and, in his first days in town, discovers the TV World with his new friends.
