On Aug. 17, 2025, Nintendo announced that Mega Evolution Pokémons are joining the roster of cards available in Pokémon TCG Pocket this Fall. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Pokémon World Championships.
The announcement came with a trailer, which showcases the three new cards that are being added to the game: Mega Altaria ex, Mega Gyarados ex and Mega Blaziken ex. At a glance, it seems that they have quite a bit of HP, making them hard to eliminate from the field.
However, upon taking a closer look at the cards, a new rule revealed itself called the Mega Evolution ex rule, where knocking out one awards the player three points. This essentially means that the person who knocks out a Mega Evolution ex card instantly wins the game.
As such, a strategy that might be employed by players is to bench their Mega Evolution cards until the very last moment to prevent an instant loss. Confident players might have other strategies that involve the cards, however.
Recently, Pokémon announced that the VGC will officially move away from the mainline Pokémon titles and will use Pokémon Champions as its official game. Centro Leaks, a prominent Pokémon leaker, also added that certain regions will still use Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet for Championship Series events.
