Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over 6.2 million copies globally, according to a post from Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series, on X (formerly Twitter).

Developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games, the 12th main installment in the Mortal Kombat series, which serves as the franchise’s second reboot after 2011’s Mortal Kombat, was released on Sept. 19, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S.

The events of Mortal Kombat 1 unfold in a new timeline (the third main timeline in the franchise’s history), where Liu Kang assembles a group of fighters to participate in the latest Mortal Kombat tournament in Outworld while contending with an alliance formed by Titan Shang Tsung. In the follow-up expansion titled Khaos Reigns, Liu Kang and his allies must contend with Titan Havik.

Notably, due to its violence and gore, Mortal Kombat 1 is banned in Japan, South Korea and China.

The title won the category of “Best Multiplayer Game” at the 2023 Golden Joystick Awards and also received awards such as “Barrier Breaker ”and the “AbilityPoints Diamond Award” at the Can I Play That Awards 2023, which was hosted in 2024.

As of the time of writing, the game has a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam with 25,530 reviews and an all-time peak of 38,129 players.
