Key points

  1. Sony has finally hit the 80-million milestone in PlayStation 5 sales, according to its latest financial report.
  2. Sony’s gaming division remains its highest-earning segment.
  3. The PlayStation 5 was released in 2020.

On Aug. 7, 2025, Sony released its financial results for Q1 2025, which ended on June 30, 2025. The report revealed that the company has shipped 2.5 million units that quarter, which finally pushes the PlayStation 5’s sales above 80 million units.

Year-over-year, there’s a minuscule increase in sales of the PlayStation 5, as it actually only sold 2.4 million units last year in the same time period. If Sony’s reports are to go by, sales of the consoles usually increase during Q2 and Q3, with a drop happening in Q4.

In February, Gaming.News reported that as of fiscal year 2024 Q3, Sony has sold more than 75 million units of PlayStation 5. FY2024 Q4 added 2.8 million units to that, while FY2025 Q1 added 2.4 million units, which totaled just a little over 80 million units.

Regarding PlayStation Network, Sony saw a very minute drop quarter-over-quarter but an increase year-over-year. FY2024 Q1 only clocked in about 116 million monthly active users, but this year, that number rose to 123 million.

PlayStation Network numbers usually drop at the beginning of the fiscal year and go up in Q3 before dropping again in Q4. This time, since it started at 123 million, there’s a chance that Sony might have a great fiscal year in this division.

Sony’s gaming segment performed well year-over-year, with an overall increase in sales of pretty much everything. This includes game software sales, both physical and digital. The report also showed that Gaming and Network Services is still Sony’s highest-earning division.
