On Aug. 6, 2025, the developer of Vile: Exhumed announced that the game will be free after it was banned from Steam. The developer, Cara Cadaver, clarified that the game “was not banned due to its use of gore in storytelling, or the violent themes.” It was banned for “sexual content with depiction of real people.”
However, the developer fired back by saying that “if you played it, you know is [sic] all implied, making this all feel even worse.” Over a week after that, Cara Cadaver decided to release the game for free and donate a portion of their profits to Red Door Family Shelter, a Toronto-based charity helping families, refugees and women who are escaping violence. DreadXP, the game’s publisher, will give 100% of its profits from the game to the aforementioned charity.
Vile: Exhumed is a game that covers heavy topics such as abuse and gore. It also shows intense visuals, but there is no uncensored nudity, sex acts or pornography that can be found in the game. The developer ended their statement by saying, “No one is allowed to dictate what kind of horror is acceptable, or what stories are allowed to be told.”
Cara Cadaver’s Vile: Exhumed is a game that has been trapped in the recent struggle against censorship in games. Recently, itch.io has removed NSFW content from its storefront to appease payment processors.
