Steam Polishes Store Page Trailers for Better Performance

|
- Valve has updated the Steam store page trailers and the player itself.
- The update went live on July 31, which added new features such as image previews while seeking.
- Valve said that it had to re-encode 400,000 video files for this update.
Valve announced on July 31 that store page trailers have been polished to “improve usability, quality, and bandwidth usage.” According to Valve, this update caused them to re-encode around 400,000 video files. As such, trailers are now much more efficient when it comes to consuming internet bandwidth.
Additionally, the trailer player can now handle “any aspect ratio of video, properly scaling, centering, and letterboxing as necessary.” This makes it easier for the player to adjust to whatever device it is playing on. In fact, it is also highlighted in one of the post’s pointers about Adaptable UI.
Finally, Steam’s trailer player now features preview images while seeking, as well as faster scrubbing and full-screen transitions. This will make it easier for fans to check out the trailer quickly or if they’re looking for a specific part in the trailer.
Unfortunately, some of the older trailers have not been re-encoded like the others. According to Valve, it no longer has the original files in the Steam system, which makes it hard for them to re-encode them.
