On July 29, 2025, Atlus announced that the newest entry to the Shin Megami Tensei series, Shin Megami Tensei V, had sold over 2 million copies worldwide. The game was released back in 2021 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.
Shin Megami Tensei V is part of Atlus’ long-running franchise of Shin Megami Tensei. The popular Persona franchise is actually a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise.
This specific title has the player take on the role of a Nahobino, a fusion of a human and demon, who explores a post-apocalyptic world. Compared to Persona, the Shin Megami Tensei games are a lot darker, grittier and harder.
Mechanics such as negotiations, weakness and resistances, and turn-based gameplay are present in the game. Negotiation, more formally known as Demon Negotiation, is a mechanic popularized by the series, which allows players to talk to the demons they’re fighting against in hopes of extorting money or items, or even getting them to help the protagonist by joining the party.
In 2024, Atlus wanted to release the game to other consoles, resulting in the development of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. This is an enhanced version of the game, which includes rebalances, improved navigation and new difficulty level. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the PC.
