The script for the live-action series of God of War is in the works, as revealed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore in talks with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
Moore, known for “Battlestar Galactica” and “For All Mankind,” formally stepped into his role as showrunner, writer and executive producer of Amazon’s “God of War” live-action series in late October 2024, shortly after the previous creative leadership, Rafe Judkins, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, departed amid a shift in the project’s creative direction. The series was officially announced on May 26, 2022.
The showrunner of Amazon’s God of War live-action adaptation called the franchise’s depth impressive and credited game director Cory Barlog with crafting a rich and layered world. “Cory Barlog is a genius,” Moore said. “He can tell you the whole thing in every possible way — all the mythology, how it connects one to the other… It’s like a gigantic novel.”
On top of that, Moore highlighted that 2018’s God of War and the upcoming series won’t be like two peas in a pod. He clarified that the project is an adaptation but promised the show would preserve the characters, core story and tone.
In his interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Moore teased that the upcoming live-action adaptation may include some stories prior to the Norse mythology turn in Kratos’s adventure.
As of the time of writing, the God of War franchise has nine installments, with 2022’s God of War Ragnarök being the latest. As of November 2023, the franchise has sold over 66 million copies worldwide.
