Key points
  1. Splitgate 2 is back in beta until early next year.
  2. The game was released in full on June 6, 2025 across platforms, but was greeted with “Mixed” Steam reviews and mediocre critic reviews.
  3. The original Splitgate servers are being shut down in a month.

CEO of 1047 Games Ian Proulx announced that Splitgate 2 is unlaunching, returning to its open beta until early 2026. The game has been bleeding players since its official full launch on June 6, 2025; the title saw a massive wave of criticism for various features, including its microtransaction prices, as according to Kotaku. Splitgate 2 currently sits at “Mixed” overall and recent Steam reviews

The return to beta was announced via X, where the dev team communicated that they launched the game too early, which caused them to make “boneheaded mistakes” and failed to provide players a polished, portal-filled mayhem.

“We’ll be heads down until early next year, rebuilding major parts of the game to capture the spirit of what made Splitgate special. That means reworking progression from the ground up,” the social media post communicates.

The social media post states that the studio made the difficult decision to reduce certain roles and shift its resources to focus on the rework. In addition to this announcement, the development team stated that the original Splitgate servers are being shut down in around a month due to high costs of maintaining the game, reallocating the resources to reportedly retain as many team members as possible.

“While we’d love to keep servers online indefinitely, it’s cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars over the past couple of years, and we have to prioritize our team,” the post reads.

IGN gave Splitgate 2 a 7/10 upon its official release. The title was released on Playstation, PC, and Xbox. During its release, the free to play Splitgate 2 hit an all time high of 25,785 concurrent players on Steam, which drastically dropped through the month of June. As of writing, the game sits at 1,337 concurrent players on Steam.
