Game developer Alexander “Red888guns” Berezin launched a trailer for their upcoming project, Fallout: Bakersfield, on July 20, 2025. The trailer showcases gameplay utilizing the GZDoom engine, which is a source port for games that use the Doom engine. The mod is marketed to remake the entirety of Necroplis from Fallout 1 as a first-person campaign within the Doom engine.

The last update prior to the recent trailer reveal was more than two years ago, when the creator shared a 55-second gameplay trailer. As of writing, the Fallout: Bakersfield mod has no set release date. Eager players can support the creator by donating on Boosty. The creator stated that financial support is not necessarily and will not generally affect the development process.

Many users on social media commented on the “realistic” depiction of Bakersfield. “As someone who grew up in California This is just Bakersfield, ghouls and all. But with the addition of plasma guns,” one user commented.

“Why did Bakersfield get a glow up in the apocalypse?” another commenter joked.

PC Gamer believes Berezin’s style is a perfect match for the 2.5D presentation of Doom, stating that the mod even has the vacuum tube, cheesy jokes, and green message readout for damage numbers that were iconic in the Doom franchise.

Fallout 1 was initially released in 1997, while the first Doom game was released in 1993. The GZDoom engine which Fallout: Bakersfield is built on is not the original Doom engine, but an enhanced source port that allows classic games to be played on modern operating systems with various improvements and extended modding capabilities.
