Yoshie Murabe, a 73-year-old Panda player, has won Care Esports’ nursing home Tekken 8 tournament. The Esports team holds online tournaments for elderly people in Japan. Tekken 8 is the newest game added to the tournament.
The Panda player faced off against Sadayuki Kato, a King player. The whole tournament was streamed online, complete with commentary, and even player interviews after matches. The grand final matches were filled with high-octane action, with both players pressing buttons continuously for an all-out brawl.
It can also be seen that the players have a basic understanding of the game based on the combos and sequences that the two players have showcased. From the stream, it doesn’t seem like the two players are using Tekken 8’s special style.
Game*Spark, a Japanese outlet, has conducted an interview with both the winner of the tournament and the public relations officer of Care eSports Association, Shinpei Hama. According to him, he was one of the people who wanted to try putting Tekken 8 into the tournament.
He revealed that at first, the only games in the tournament were Shogi and Othello; however, he saw that there was an opportunity for a fighting game to be included in it. Since he is a professional Tekken player, it was one of the games he suggested.
When asked about whether there might be more games included in the tournament in the future, Hama mentioned that he wants to put more fighting games in. But currently, he’s looking at Geoguessr as the next possible addition.
