RimWorld almost reached a peak of 100,000 concurrent players on Steam two days after the launch of its new expansion, Odyssey, on July 11, 2025.
According to data from SteamDB, the new DLC boosted the game’s online player count to a new record of 94,648 concurrent users, surpassing the previous peak of 62,257.
Odyssey became the fifth expansion for the game, following the Royalty, Ideology, Biotech and Anomaly DLCs.
Developed by Canadian game designer Tynan Sylvester and published by Ludeon Studios, RimWorld was initially launched on Oct. 17, 2018, for Linux, macOS and Windows PCs, and then ported to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on July 29, 2022. The game is also playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, thanks to backward compatibility.
Set in the distant future, this construction and management simulator takes place in a universe where humans have spread across the stars but remain constrained by the speed of light as the ultimate travel limit. This has caused a disparity in the development of human colonies isolated from one another; some societies advance technologically, while others regress due to war or disease. With all the conditions of the game world taken into account, the game tasks players with overseeing colonists stranded on a procedurally generated planet located deep in space.
As of the time of writing, the game has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with 182,120 reviews.
On top of that, according to Gamalytic’s data, the sci-fi colony simulator has sold over 6 million copies since its release.
In February 2022, RimWorld’s console port was refused classification by the Australian Classification Board due to its depictions of drug use, which led to the game being pulled from Steam for Australian users. On April 20, 2022, the game was classified as R18+ in Australia and was made available on Steam again.
