Set in the fictional city of Eriksholm, inspired by early-20th-century Scandinavian cities and architecture, the game follows the story of a young orphan, Hanna, who is trying to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of her brother, Herman.
Besides Hanna, the game features two more playable characters, Alva and Sebastian, who become available for exploration of the city, puzzle solving and stealth missions as the story progresses. The characters differ in skills, tools and weapons from each other: Hanna can crawl through vents, Alva can climb drainpipes, and Sebastian can swim.
