On July 8, 2025, Wargaming released a statement on Steam saying that Steel Hunters, the free-to-play mech shooter, is shutting down. This news came just three months after the game was released in early access on April 2.

“Today we share difficult news: we’ve made the decision to sunset Steel Hunters. You’ve given us so much passion and support but unfortunately we’ve come to the conclusion that continuing development is not sustainable,” the statement reads.

The developers added that the game servers will still be up for 90 days and that the actual sunset of the game will be on Oct. 8. All hunters are also going to be unlocked for every player, “including Hunters nobody has seen yet.”

A farewell tournament is also being planned by the developers, and more information about it will be revealed on the game’s Discord server. Additionally, custom game support will be rolled out in the next few weeks for players to be able to set up community matches.

Steel Hunters has an all-time peak player count of only 4,479 players on Steam. The count has not improved since its release and has only gone down. Now, the game only has a 24-hour peak of 92, which is very low for a live-service shooter game.
