Open-world survival title Subnautica was launched on Android and iOS on July 8, 2025.
The game is set in an open-world environment and played from a first-person perspective. In Subnautica, players assume the role of Ryley Robinson, a survivor of a spaceship crash on an alien oceanic planet, with the main objectives of finding essential resources, surviving the local flora and fauna and finding a way to escape the ocean world.
The launch happened a couple of days after three key executives of the studio behind Subnautica, including CEO Ted Gill, co-founder and Subnautica franchise creative director Charlie Cleveland, and co-founder and technical director Max McGuire, departed the studio for undisclosed reasons, ahead of the Subnautica 2 launch.
Developed and published by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Subnautica was initially released in early access for Windows in December 2014, macOS in June 2015 and Xbox One in May 2016. On Jan. 23, 2018, the game launched out of early access for macOS and Windows PCs. Almost a year later, on Dec. 4, 2018, Subnautica received versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the physical console versions being published by Gearbox. On May 14, 2021, the title was ported to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s mobile port was handled by Pladigious.
By January 2020, Subnautica had sold over 5 million copies globally across all platforms.
On top of that, the game received a “Breakthrough Award” and “PC Game of the Year” at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2018. The same year, Subnautica was also awarded “Fan Favorite Indie Game” at the Gamers’ Choice Awards.
As of the time of writing, Subnautica has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with 285,446 reviews and a peak online of 51,156 concurrent players, according to SteamDB.
A sequel to the original Subnautica and the third game in the series after 2021’s Subnautica: Below Zero, Subnautica 2 is slated to be released via early access mode in 2025.
