The Community Workers of America (CWA) published a statement on July 3, addressing the Microsoft layoffs, which number over 9,000 affected employees. Within the statement, the CWA communicated its intent to continue protecting the workforce while expressing deep disappointment in Microsoft’s actions:

“In times like these, union organizing is not just a tool for protections in the workplace; it is essential to workers’ survival, and one of the strongest defenses we have against unchecked corporate power,” Communications Workers of America President Claude Cummings Jr wrote

“This news will not slow the movement for a video game industry that works for those who make it what it is today. Our strength is in our unity.”

Halo Studios’ morale is at a low point after layoffs took at least five employees. Meanwhile, Romero Games’ funding was completely axed, resulting in project cancellations and layoffs. Warcraft Rumble, a mobile Warcraft title, ceased updates as a result of Microsoft’s decision.  Microsoft’s massive layoffs have led to Perfect Dark’s reboot being canceled as the studio behind it, The Initiative, has been closed down.

The CWA reportedly includes over 2,600 workers at Microsoft-owned studios, a number reported prior to widespread layoffs that occurred in early July.
