- The game’s live-service updates were canceled earlier in 2021.
EA is shutting down Anthem servers on Jan. 12, 2026. The shutdown was announced on July 3. Since the game is purely online, once the servers go down, Anthem will be completely inaccessible to gamers. Developed by BioWare and published by EA, Anthem was initially released in 2019. The title cost $60 during its initial launch. No refunds were announced by EA.
“After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline,” an official EA statement reads. EA stated that the sunset of Anthem did not result in additional layoffs at BioWare.
The online multiplayer live-service shooter received poor reviews on release, with IGN giving it 6.5/10 and GameSpot giving the title 6/10. EA canceled live-service updates for the game in 2021 but kept the servers running.
Anthem does not support cross-platform multiplayer despite the title relying heavily on multiplayer and having been released on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Anthem sold over 5 million copies, according to PC Gamer.
