11 bit studios was accused of using generative AI in its latest game, The Alters, a title that was released on June 13, 2025. The game development studio confirmed the use of AI in a public statement, stating, “AI-generated assets were strictly used as temporary WIPs during the development process and in a very limited manner.”

The studio did not apologize for the use of AI, focusing its public statement on clairvoyance rather than expressing regret.

“During production, an AI-generated text for a graphic asset, which was meant as a piece of background texture, was used by one of our graphical designers as a placeholder. This was never intended to be part of the final release,” the studio communicated.

We’ve seen a wide range of accusations regarding the use of AI-generated content in The Alters, and we feel it’s important to clarify our approach and give you more context.

The asset was mistakenly left in the game; the studio claims that the team conducted a thorough review and that this was an isolated case.

“While we do not want to downplay the situation, we also want to clearly show its limited impact on your gaming experience,” the public announcement reads, justifying the oversight and the supposed minor implications of the mistake rather than apologizing.

The announcement goes on to detail the other AI-influenced aspects of production, including the localization of videos by using AI to show a few licensed movies within the game in the social area of the base.

The few movies make up approximately 0.3% of the overall text, according to the public statement – the alternative would have been to release the dialogue in English only, which the studio claims would have worsened the experience for non-English speakers.

The Alters was developed and published by 11 bit studios, saw an all time-peak of 18,120 concurrent players on Steam. Alina Analytics reports that the game sold over 135,000 copies on Steam, surpassing the three million dollar revenue mark. The Alters was released for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and PlayStation 5 on June 13, 2025.
