Set primarily in Australia, eleven months after the events of the Death Stranding, in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by otherworldly creatures the story foolows Sam Bridges, a freelance porter, as he and his companions set out on an expedition across the Australian continent to connect isolated survivors and colonies to the wireless communications “chiral” network in order to save humanity from extinction.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach features the previous game’s central characters, including Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), Fragile (Léa Seydoux), Higgs (Troy Baker), and Heartman (Nicolas Winding Refn), accompanied by new cast members Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, Luca Marinelli, Alastair Duncan, Alissa Jung, and Debra Wilson, with special appearances from George Miller and Fatih Akin.

The sequel was nominated for Most Wanted Game at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2023 and for Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards 2024.

The first part of the Death Stranding series was initially released for PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019, followed by a Windows PC port on July 14, 2020.

On September 24, 2021, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut was released for PlayStation 5, followed by releases for Windows PC on March 30, 2022, and for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS on January 30, 2024. Ports for Amazon Luna and Xbox Series X|S were released on November 7, 2024.

The first installment of the Death Stranding franchise has won 11 awards across various industry ceremonies. As of the time of writing, Death Stranding: Director’s Cut has a Very Positive rating on Steam with 30,151 reviews. At the end of March 2025, the game surpassed the milestone of 20 million players.
