An action-adventure puzzler created by Swedish developer Image & Form, it is the second installment in the SteamWorld series of seven games after 2010’s SteamWorld Tower Defense.
In SteamWorld Dig, players assume control of a steam-powered robot named Rusty, who arrives at the small Western-steampunk mining town of Tumbleton after receiving a deed for a mine from his uncle Joe. Initially, Rusty is equipped with a pickaxe, while a variety of tools, such as a drill and dynamite, can be unlocked as the player progresses through the game. The main objective of the game is to investigate the mines underneath Tumbleton.
The game was initially released on the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS in Europe and Australia on August 7, 2013. Later, it was also released in North America and Japan for the Nintendo 3DS. The game subsequently landed on Windows, Linux, and macOS PCs, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and even Google’s Stadia cloud gaming service, which was shut down on January 18, 2023.
As of the time of writing the game has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam with 5,840 reviews. As of November 2017, SteamWorld Dig had sold over 1 million copies across all platforms.
