Sonic the Hedgehog Fan Fighting Game Released on Sega Mascot’s Birthday

- ArcForged released a 3-vs-3 Sonic fan fighting game, Ultimate Sonic Smackdown, on the day of his birthday.
- The game only has five characters and will have more in the future, presumably.
- Ultimate Sonic Smackdown is only available for the PC.
A group of Sonic the Hedgehog fans released a 3-vs-3 fighting game on June 23, which is Sonic’s birthday. The game has been in development for quite some time now; however, the developers did not provide a timeframe for when it actually started.
The game is called Ultimate Sonic Smackdown and is being developed by ArcForged. The game currently has five characters:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Knuckles the Echidna
- Shadow the Hedgehog
- Doctor Eggman
- Mecha Sonic
With Tails, Amy and other major characters missing, it’s safe to say that the game’s roster will only further expand the longer the game is out. With that being said, Ultimate Sonic Smackdown’s gameplay looks like it has drawn inspiration from Marvel vs. Capcom 3. For example, both of the games have a similar cutscene when a character does their super move.
Additionally, the developers are taking an amusing stance regarding the game’s early access release. When asked on X about move lists and resources, the developer simply replied, “Nope, first alpha release is ‘Try new things and have fun’.” This was very common during the arcade days, when players spent a lot of time playing the game just to figure out the basic mechanics of a fighting game.
Ultimate Sonic Smackdown is available for the PC. It can be downloaded from its itch.io page. For players who simply want to play 1-vs-1, the developers have confirmed that 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 modes are available.
