RimWorld will simultaneously receive a paid expansion titled Odyssey and a free 1.6 title update. According to the developer’s post on Steam from June 11, 2025, the content will be released in about a month.

Odyssey will become the fifth paid DLC, following the Anomaly, Biotech, Ideology and Royalty expansions that were always released alongside big free updates.

As for the upcoming Odyssey DLC, it will introduce a new gravship-building mechanic that allows players to travel across the planet, mine ore-rich asteroids, explore orbital platforms and derelict satellites, hunt for treasures, and scavenge forgotten gravtech.

Building the gravship will start with small necessities like the engine, thrusters, chemfuel and a few rooms for the crew, but over time, it will be possible to expand it into an entire mobile colony with labs, hospitals and workshops. Expanding the gravship will require gravcores, glittertech devices that can be collected from caverns, ancient reactors, crash-landed space wrecks and orbital platforms.

RimWorld – Odyssey will also add the possibility to hop on a 100-day journey around the world and catch all the existing animals to build a zoo at the colony. On top of that, the DLC will bring an opportunity to live in space for as long as the player wants and hunker down inside an asteroid.

The upcoming expansion will also bring new biomes like glowforest, full of bioluminescent mushrooms and psychedelic spores; war-torn remains of once-thriving cities called Scarlands; grasslands; glacial plains; and constantly changing lava fields.

A new landmarks system will also be introduced as part of Odyssey. It will combine biomes with each other to deliver landscape variation to RimWorld. Landmarks will have different features that can affect the game in various ways, such as map generation affecting the rarity of resources and plant variety.

On top of that, RimWorld – Odyssey is about to add over 40 new animals, a new weapon system, new gear and multiple new quests.

As for update 1.6, it is already available on the unstable Steam branch for public beta testing to provide modders some time to update their mods before its launch.

Among over 326 fixes, update 1.6 will bring major performance optimizations, quality-of-life changes, UI improvements, reduced game launch time, an improved planning system, different drawing styles for designator tools, caravan camps, easier building upgrades, new art, an improved search bar, revamped map generation, reworked Scaria and changes for rooms, armor and weapons.

Notably, the Odyssey DLC comes with a new album of music by Alistair Lindsay, composer of the RimWorld soundtrack.

Developed by Canadian game designer Tynan Sylvester and published by Ludeon Studios, RimWorld is currently available on Linux, macOS and Windows PCs, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

As of the time of writing, the game has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with 178,683 reviews and an all-time peak of 62,257 concurrent players, according to SteamDB.
