Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has reached a tentative agreement on terms for the Interactive Media Contract with video game companies such as Activision, Blindlight, Disney, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac, Take Two, and WB Games.
This SAG-AFTRA strike continued since its beginning on July 26, 2024, after year and a half of failed negotiations with video game companies failed to secure protections against the unauthorized use of AI to replicate actors’ voices and likenesses.
The tentative agreement is about to be reviewed and approved by the National Board. After that, it will be ratified by the SAG-AFTRA membership. The whole process is expected to take a couple of weeks, with specific details of the agreement to be released along with the ratification materials, according to SAG-AFTRA’s official statement.
However, until the agreement is officially signed by both parties, SAG-AFTRA members will remain on strike against the employers.
As for the strike’s impact, on September 17, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom officially signed two bills: AB 2602, which grants protections against AI being used on living performers, and AB 1836, which grants protections against AI being used on dead performers and grants rights to use their appearance and voice to their successors.
