Black Myth: Wukong is slated for release on Xbox on Aug. 20, 2025, according to an official announcement from the title’s developer and publisher, Game Science. The launch will happen exactly a year after the game’s initial release on PC and PlayStation 5 on Aug. 20, 2024.

For Xbox Series X|S users who pre-order the game, Black Myth: Wukong will become available starting June 18, 2025.

According to Game Science CEO and game director Feng Ji, the main issue in creating an Xbox port was the low amount of RAM in the Xbox Series S, which is 10 GB, configured in two distinct memory pools: 8 GB operating at a bandwidth of 224 GB/s, primarily allocated for graphics processing, while 2 GB run at 56 GB/s, designated for system operations and background tasks.

Notably, as reported by Forbes, the delay of the Xbox port happened due to Game Science’s exclusive deal with Sony, which included keeping the game off Xbox. This led to a statement from Microsoft declaring, “As we have said before, we’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We’d prefer not to comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us.”

In the game inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West, players assume the role of a monkey protagonist called the Destined One, a character based on the novel’s hero, Sun Wukong, on his journey to recover six relics. The protagonist is armed only with a staff, and during the game, he can find 21 distinct staffs that differ in unique effects and stats.

As of early 2025, Black Myth: Wukong has surpassed 25 million copies sold worldwide, according to estimates by analytics firm Niko Partners.

As of the time of writing, Black Myth: Wukong features an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam with 835,224 reviews and a peak of 2,415,714 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. Black Myth: Wukong has won 25 different industry awards across multiple categories.
