Key points

  1. XDefiant is shutting down its servers today.
  2. The game was officially revealed on May 21, 2024.
  3. The reason for its shutdown was the failure to retain players and lower sales than anticipated.

XDefiant’s servers are going down today, just a year since its official release. The game was positioned as a competitor to games like Call of Duty and Warzone. It was announced on July 20, 2021, through a reveal video and was officially released on May 21, 2024.

A few weeks later, on August 5, the game started its first of many tests. Its final closed beta happened on April 13, where it saw huge viewership on Twitch, beating both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone’s number of viewers combined.

However, the game was not able to retain players and was earning less money than the developers had anticipated, despite XDefiant being one of Ubisoft’s fastest-growing games. As such, Ubisoft announced in December 2024 that the game is closing down on June 3. Players are offered refunds of their purchases, with those who bought the Ultimate Founder’s Pack receiving full refunds.

XDefiant was released on May 21, 2024, for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game spanned three seasons, with its latest one adding the Assassins faction from Assassin’s Creed.
