Mary Adeyemi, sister of agent Phoenix, becomes the lead character of the new Valorant cinematic dedicated to the game’s 5-year anniversary.
Released by Riot Games, the special cinematic titled “Why We Fight” features Qing Madi’s song Ego, performed by Phoenix’s sister under her stage name Mary Ade. The video reflects on the event of First Light, which spanned the entirety of the Alpha and Omega Earths and laid the foundation for the Valorant protocol.
“When we thought about how we could integrate music to commemorate our anniversary, we asked ourselves, what if we created a special music moment that reflects the journey of our players and characters? This path led us to Mary, our first non-playable character in Valorant and Phoenix’s estranged sister.” said creative director David Nottingham in talks with Variety.
Developed and published by Riot Games on June 2, 2020, Valorant won the title of Best Esports Game at The Game Awards 2022 and Best Streaming Game at the Golden Joystick Awards.
Valorant has an active esports scene, and the highest tier of its competition, called Valorant Champions, is hosted by the game’s developer itself. This annual professional Valorant world championship tournament is the culmination of each VCT season and the hardest tournament to qualify for. In 2025, Valorant Champions is planned to take place in Paris in autumn.
