Next Minecraft content drop, Chase the Skies, was teased in the game’s official blog, hinting that the update is coming soon.
As was revealed during Minecraft Live at the end of March 2025, the update will be all about Ghasts. It will include the Dried Ghast block and the new Ghastling and Happy Ghast mob variants. In order to bring a Dried Ghast to a better mood, players will need to pick it up from the Nether and place it in water, so it transforms into a much happier Ghastling floating around the Overworld like a balloon. If fed snowballs, it will eventually grow into a flying Happy Ghast. To ride it, players need to craft a harness for the Happy Ghast, use the harness to coax it closer, and then jump on it. One Happy Ghast can carry up to four players at a time.
According to the developer, dehydrated blocks of Dried Ghast will usually be located around fossil structures, as well as available for barter with piglins. On top of that, players will be able to craft Dried Ghasts on their own using ghast tears and a soul sand block.
In the new update, users will also get the Player Locator feature. A special bar will help those on a player’s Realm see where their mate has gotten into trouble and make the search for a lost friend easier. Notably, those who don’t want to be found with the Player Locator bar can remain undetected by simply crouching.
The Player Locator bar will be placed in the same spot as the XP bar when other players visit the user’s world, showing quest locations with colored dots.
The Chase the Skies update will also change the lead recipe, allowing players to craft them using only string. On top of that, nearly any entity can be leashed to another after the new content drop. This creates opportunities for forming chains, such as mob caravans or boats tethered beneath flying mobs like Happy Ghasts.
Saddles will become craftable using 3 leather and 1 iron ingot, making it easier to gear up a player’s mounts. Shears will also gain new functionality, they will become capable of removing specific leads from a knot without breaking the entire group.
Officially released on November 18, 2011, Minecraft tops the list of best-selling video games with 350 million copies sold.
