Key points
  1. New Nintendo Switch App now supports automatic screenshot and video uploads from Switch 2 consoles, with 30-day cloud storage.
  2. GameChat notifications introduced for voice/video calls, requiring phone number verification.
  3. Zelda Notes feature adds voice-guided navigation, achievement tracking, and collectible sharing for updated Zelda titles on Switch 2.

Nintendo has updated its mobile app ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch, rebranding it as the “Nintendo Switch App” and introducing several new features designed to enhance user experience. The App is available both on Android and iOS devices.

Arguably the most notable addition is the ability for Switch 2 users to upload screenshots and videos directly to the app. This new feature allows for automatic uploads of the 100 most recent media files, which remain available in the cloud for up to 30 days. Users can then save these files permanently to their mobile devices. This streamlines the previously cumbersome process of transferring media via QR codes or social media platforms.

The app also introduces GameChat notifications, allowing users to receive alerts for voice or video chat invitations during gameplay. GameChat is Nintendo’s new in-game voice communication service, similar to Discord or Xbox and PlayStation party chats. Unlike those platforms, however, Nintendo requires users to link a mobile phone number as an “additional security measure” to access voice features.

Additionally, the app now includes “Zelda Notes,” a companion service exclusive to the Switch 2 editions of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom”. Zelda Notes offers voice-guided navigation to in-game locations, achievement tracking, and the ability to share in-game items and blueprints via QR codes. It also provides access to new in-game collectibles — character voice memories, — and daily bonuses.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on June 5, 2025. The console will be available in two configurations: the standard model priced at $449.99 and a bundle that includes Mario Kart World for $499.99. Pre-orders began on April 24, 2025, and quickly sold out at major retailers. The original Nintendo Switch, released in March 2017, has sold over 150 million units worldwide, making it Nintendo’s best-selling home console and the third best-selling video game console of all time.
