CD Projekt Red has officially moved its next major Cyberpunk game, codenamed “Project Orion,” into preproduction, according to the company’s latest earnings report. Referred to internally as “Cyberpunk 2,” the sequel will expand the universe established by Cyberpunk 2077, which has sold over 25 million copies since its December 2020 release.
According to a slide deck from April 30, 2025, 96 developers are working on the project. While the title “Cyberpunk 2” is provisional, CD Projekt Red describes it as “the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe.” The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to feature a new city setting alongside the return of Night City.
In addition to the sequel, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion, Phantom Liberty, has surpassed 10 million copies sold. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which includes the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion, will be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The company also revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 60 million copies worldwide.
Despite these successes, CD Projekt reported a 14.1% year-on-year decline in net profit for the first quarter, totaling 86 million Polish zlotys (~$22.3 million), due to higher tax payments. Revenue for the period remained steady at 226.3 million zlotys (~$58.84 million).
No release date has been announced for the Cyberpunk sequel yet.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched on Dec. 10, 2020, after years of hype and multiple delays. While praised for its narrative, gameplay, art direction, worldbuilding and performances — particularly Keanu Reeves’ role — the game was heavily criticized for technical issues, especially on last-gen consoles. Widespread bugs, crashes and performance problems led to refund offers, delisting from the PlayStation Store and regulatory scrutiny.
CD Projekt Red faced intense backlash but committed to long-term support. Over time, the studio released numerous patches and improvements. The redemption arc, often compared to No Man’s Sky and Final Fantasy XIV comebacks, culminated with the release of the acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023, and in 2025 Cyberpunk 2077 finally earned an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam.
